Description: Museum was established in June, 1891 by professor V. Dokuchayev, collector and geographer, as a museum of natural history. The basis of the collection constituted the things, which were found in Poltava province during the expedition on Poltava soils, flora and fauna exploration under the lead of the professor.
Herbarium and the collection of soils became the basis for the 1st Poltava museum, which was opened in September, 1891. Now several of the first museum rooms are dedicated to the animal and plant world of this region, and also to its former residents.
Nowadays museum exposition is represented in 35 rooms and consists of more than 200 000 exhibits. Here you can see a unique collection of the old Ukrainian carpets and rugs, ancient stone images from the steppes etc. In this museum the bells of Uspenskyi Cathedral are preserved.
You can also see a good collection of weapon in the exposition of the museum: horse-tails and clubs, sabers and armours etc.
There is a small stand with oriental exhibits: teapot from China, which is decorated with images of Chinese with nimbuses over their heads, Chinese armour etc. | |
