Chrestovozdvyzhenskyi Cathedral is one of the part of the great Chrestovozdvyzhenkyi Monastery which was built in 17th century in honour of Ukrainian troops victory over Polish army. During all time of its existence Chrestovozdvyzhenskyi monastery was the cultural and educational center of left-bank Ukraine. It was being a monastery for male for a long time, however, finally it was transformed to female monastery. Monastery consists of monastery bell tower, Chrestovozdvyzhenskyi Cathedral, Troitska Church, Semenivskyi Church, northern entrance, Western entrance, household building and dwellings. Chrestovozdvyzhenskyi Cathedral was built by the instrumentality of Kalistrat, the Father-Superior of Lubenskiy Mharskiy monastery on the funds of Cossack sergeant-majors and colonel M. Pushkar. Bell tower was built in 1786. It has a form of four-storey bell tower in late baroque style. Its height is 47 meters. Nearly all monastery descriptions (both late and early) tell about a big resemblance of this building to great Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra bell tower. Some time there were 10 different in size bells on the bell tower of Chrestovozdvyzhenskyi Cathedral. The real pride of the monastery was the 6,5 ton bell. Chrestovozdvyzhenskyi Cathedral is the only seven cupolas church in baroque style in Ukraine, which remains until now. | |
