Description: Uspenskyi Cathedral, which was built during 1748-1770, was the 1st stone-made building in Poltava. It is Uspenkyi Cathedral that started the Orthodox history of the city. It is the first municipal cathedral of Poltava city. It was destroyed by communist regime in 1934.The only thing remained is the bell tower. The height of its the broaches is app. 44 m. In the previous century the bell tower was equipped with the bell ‘Kizi-Kermen’, which was made of Turkish cannons in the end of 19th century. Now this bell is preserved in museum of local lore. This cathedral has always been a great spiritual sanctuary, temple of Lord, prayers’ house for such outstanding personalities as Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Kotlyarevskyi, Panas Myrnyi, Ivan Kozlovskyi etc. | |
