Dmytro Angelsky
Dmytro Ivanovych Angelsky, talented graphic artist and painter, was born on November 16 (new style – 28), 1898 in town of Święciany, Vilna Governorate, Russian Empire (now, Švenčionys, Lithuania). Since 1915 and until his death he lived in Poltava. From the first days of the stay onward he fell in love with the city. Angelsky devoted many of his paintings to Poltava, including the famous "Oktyabrsky Garden. Poltava", "On the Psel River”. His other well-known paintings are "Interior of N. Yaroshenko’s room at Poltava Art Gallery", "Small stacks", still life "Sunflowers" (all - 1926). In the field of graphic art he created numerous book headpieces and end slices to publications "Poltava land. Collection" (1927), “Carpet making and rugs of Poltava land", "V. G. Korolenko Poltava State Museum" by Y. Ryzhenko (both - 1928, all - Poltava), which ornamental motifs were interpreted creatively, used traditions of Ukrainian book art of the Baroque period in. Angelsky drew portraits of artists in pencil, including those of P. Horobets (1924) and M. Dontsov (1931), the both works are kept at Poltava Art Museum.
This is Dmytro Angelsky who was assigned to design “Poltava Peasant” magazine. He was a member of Poltava branch of АARR (Association of Artists of the Revolutionary Russia) and Poltava branch of AARU (Association of Artists of Red Ukraine).
On October 2, 1938 the artist has been extrajudicially shot by NKVD organs in Poltava.
