Fun and humorous villages of Poltava land
Fun and humorous names of the villages such as Zaburbelivka and Kynuti Nedopalky (Thrown Stubs) are quite often not only creations of folklore, but also absolutely real, as the linguists say, placenames. One should only look at the geographical map of Poltava, look in the regional directory or just wander through the territory
of the region to personally ascertain of the truth of the classic statement: "And in the merry villages, people are marry".
For how else one can explain so many unusual names on the map of the Poltava region - Vyrishal'ne (crucial) (Lohvytsya district), Zamozhne (wealthy) (Hlobyno district), Karpusi (Poltava region), Keleberdivka (Poltava region), Kurylehivka (Poltava district), Padalky (fallen) (Poltava region), Pology (childbirth; flat) (Novi Sanzhary district), Prylypka (sticker) (Kozelschyna district), Sonyachne (sunny) (Mashivska district), Tovste (thick) (Semenivka district), Shportivka (german: Sport) (Shyshaky district). These villages' names bid to beat even the names of streets of Poltava, where there are such Tupyky (ends) like Gluhyy (dead), Kryvyy (curved) and Lamanyy (broken). However, even them can surpass by the beauty of phonation such settlements as Hyryavi Iskivtsi (Lohvytsya district), Dryzhyna Hreblya (dam) (Kobelyaky district), Lobkova Balka (pubic gorge) (Khorol district), Pozharna Balka (fire gorge) (Poltava region) or Stovbyna Dolyna (valley) (Novi Sanzhary district).
There are pretty much "big" and "small" villages on Poltava land, and in the most direct sense. On the one hand, we have the Velyka (great) - Bagachka (district center), Buzova (Shyshaky district), Hremiacha 
(Mirgorod district), Krucha (cliff) (Pyryatyn district), Obukhivka (Mirgorod district), Pavlivka (Zinkov district), Rublivka (Kotel'va district), Rudka (Dykan'ka district); Velykiy (male, great) - Bairak (ravine) (Mirgorod district), Kobelyachok (Novi Sanzhary district), Pereviz (ferriage) (Shyshaky district), Trostyanets (Poltava region); Velyki (pl, great) - Budyscha (Hadiach, Dykan'ka district), Krynky (Hlobyno district), Lypnyahy (Semenivka district), Solontsi (glasswort) (Novi Sanzhary district) and, of course, Sorochyntsi (Mirgorod district). On the other hand, the cascade of names like Mala (little) - Nekhvoroscha (Mashivka district), Pereshchepyna (Novi Sanzhary district), Rublivka (Kotel'va district), Bakay (Reshetylivka district), Kobelyachok (Novi Sanzhary district), Trostyanets (Poltava region) and Mali (pl, little) Budyscha (Zinkov district). In addition, there are Vyshchi (higher) and Nyzhny (lower) Vil'shany (Poltava region), Verhnya (upper) and Nyzhnya (bottom) Zhuzhmanivka (Kozelschyna district), Stari (old) and Novi (new) Sanzhary (district center).
Although we must admit that Poltavites not always keep the brand of originality, so far there is the village of Vasylivka in six districts (Kobelyaky, Kozelschyna, Poltava, Semenivka, Chutove, Shyshaky district), in four -
Ivanivka (Velyka Bagachka, Kobelyaky, Orzhytsya,Semenivka district), three - Popivka (Zinkov, Karlivka, Myrhorod district), in two - Gogoleve (Velyka Bagachka, Shyshky district) and Kovalivka (Poltava, Shyshky district).
Though, now and again, there are interesting names, such as Bozhky (idols), and Bozhkivske and Bozhkove (idol's) (all - in Poltava region), Krotenky (Poltava region) and Krotivschyna (derives from, mole) (Velyka Bagachka district), Kozel'shchyna (district center) and Kozlivschyna (derives from, goat) (Kotel'va district). Or, touching names like Myakenkivka (soft) (Reshetylivska district).
There are also a lot of villages with very eloquent and, to say, characteristic names in Poltava land - Gadyach (gad - foul (vile) person) (district center), Holoborodkivske (bare beard) (Karlivka district), Dykan'ka (wild) (district center), Zhyrkivka (zhyr - fat) (Mashivka district), Karlivka (district center), Kobeliaky (russian, kobel - bedhopper (district center), Kozel'shchyna (district center), Kokhanivka (kokhannya - love) (Chutove district), Kryvoruchko (lame hand) (Shyshaky district), Kryvohatky (curved houses) (Poltava region), Nelyubivka (not loving) (Dykan'ka district), Patlayivka (Poltava region), Pobyvanka (Poltava region), Poteriaiky (lost) (Reshetylivskyy district), Pryshyb (Kremenchug, Shyshaky district), Svynkivka (swine-ivka) (Poltava region), Svystunivka (whistle) (Mashivka district), Sukhonosivka (dry nose) (Mashivska district), Hval'ky (bouncers) (Shyshaky district) that sound very "cool" and sometimes even appropriately, but, hopefully, not fully reflect the features of the character of the inhabitants of the land.
However, perhaps the most naturally garmonize with a typical Poltava, Kotliarevsky and Gogol style toponyms like Bezsaly (without lard) (Lohvytsya district), Buhaivka (bugai - bull) (Hlobyno district), Buhalivka (sl. buhaty - drink) (Zinkov district), Buhuny (Shyshaky district), Zachepilivka (hitch) (Novi Sanzhary district), Kanavy (ditches) (Kobelyky district), Panivanivka (pan - landlord, Ivan (name)) (Semenivka district), Pyrogy (pies) (Hlobyno district), Puzyri (bubbles) (Semenivka district), Skorobagat'ky (soon grown rich) (Lohvytsya district) and absolutely real, not anecdotal Nedoharky (cigaratte ends) (Kremenchug district).
Apparently, all these names were created only by witty and inventive persons, as no coincidence there are such villages in Poltava land as Vesela Dolyna (Merry Valley) (Hlobyno district), Vesele (merry) (Lohvytsya district) and Veselyi Podil (Merry Lowlands) (Semenivka district). Their very existence proves once again previously mentioned thesis about the interdependence of merry villages and merry men.
