Panas Myrny

   For a long time Panas Myrny lived and worked in Poltava. On the former outskirts of the town, Kobyschany, survived aMyrnyj.jpeg house where an outstanding writer lived. Now there is his house-museum.

 

   The future writer was born in Mirgorod in family of an accountant county treasury. After several years of training in schools of Mirgorod and Hadyach the boy of fourteen, was forced to earn money for living. He worked as a petty official in Gadyach, Priluki, Mirgorod, and since 1871 in Poltava, in the provincial treasury he got the rank of State Councilor.

 

   The real joy forPanas Myrny became literary activity. Instead the time for a rest, he was sitting at his desk in the evening and enthusiastically devoted himself to his hobby. Panas didn’t want to complicate relationships at work, as well as through an exceptional modesty writer was secretive all the time. Shortly before his death in a letter to J. Zubkovsky he requested not to disclose his name:"Although many of my friends know who is Panas Myrny, but I'm in my lifetime would not want to advertise my name, seriously consider it unworthy of those glorifications, which were created around the name of  Myrny”.

 

   Wide recognition and fame to Panas Myrny brought his novel "Do the Oxen Bellow, When Their Mangers Are Full?", a story "The Loose Woman". He also created the play "Of Nuns," "Temptation", "Lymerivna". After the establishment of Soviet power in Ukraine, despite his advanced age, Mirny used to go to work in the Poltava’s provincial finance department.

 

   In 1951 the centenary of the birth of the writer, in Poltava on the grave of Myrny inaugurated a monument. A monument put in the courtyard of the museum-estate.

 

   Streets, schools, libraries, cultural and educational institutions in many towns and villages of Ukraine are named after Panas Myrny.
