Science and education
Poltava region is justly considered to be a large educational and scientific center of Ukraine. 
Here in different times lived, studied or taught such masters of their particular fields as V.G. Korolenko, philosopher, writer, public progressive figure and humanist of the beginning of ХХ century, Y.V. Kondratyuk (O.G.Shargey), one of the space flights theory pioneers of the second half of XX century, A.S. Makarenko, legendary pedagogue of XX century, M.V. Ostrogradskyi, a great world-known mathematician & talented pedagogue and many others.
Nowadays secondary education is a basic part of the general life-long educational system.
There are 957 secondary educational establishments of all types and forms of ownership in the region, where 219 students are studying. There are 143 independent elementary schools with the total number of students of 2,500.
Secondary education in the region is provided by 293 establishments, where 23 thousand of students are studying. 427 educational establishments of 1-3 level of accreditation in the region provide 152 thousand of students with general secondary education.
There are 19 boarding schools for children, who require public social support and maintenance in the region, including boarding school for orphans and children who were left without parents care, 16 boarding schools for children with physical and mental disabilities, 1 sanatorium boarding school for consumptives.
A great attention is paid for talented and capable children. There are 63 establishments of different types, including 5 lyceums, 5 gymnasiums for such children. Among them there is a specialized military calisthenics lyceum in Kremenchuck city. In summer 2001 there was opened a regional pedagogical lyceum-boarding schools on the base of A.S. Makarenko Kremenchuck Pedagogical College for gifted youth from rural areas.
There are 6 specialized schools with advanced study of Biology, Ecology, Techniques and Technological Process, Agriculture etc.
In 2000-2001 there was opened Velyko-Pavlivske Specialized School named ‘FUTURE FARMER’ 
in Zinkiv region.
In 1991 there was opened Poltava department of Small Academy of Science of Ukraine, which constituted 16 school, district, city scientific communities and 11 study groups.
By 2001 there are 26 study groups at Poltava department of Small Academy of Science of Ukraine which are functioning on the base of 86 school, district, city scientific communities and 4 out-of-school establishments.
The core establishments which are responsible for management and functioning of Poltava department of Small Academy of Science of Ukraine are V.G. Korolenko State Pedagogical University of Poltava, Ukrainian Stomatological Academy, Y. Kondratyuk State Technical University of Poltava and Agricultural Academy of Poltava.
An important role in the system of life-long education plays vocational education. The network of vocational schools includes 41 state vocational schools where 17283 students are studying. There appeared educational establishments of a new type: high vocational school, interregional center, arts vocational school, in 33 vocational schools students together with vocational education obtain secondary education.
Vocational schools offer 117 professions and 3 specialities, the majority of which are integrated and complicated. Nowadays in the region 24 educational establishments are cooperating with placement service.
There are 30 high educational establishments in the region (Ukrainian Stomatological Academy, V.G. Korolenko State Pedagogical University of Poltava, Y. Kondratyuk State Technical University of Poltava, Agricultural Academy of Poltava, University of Consumer’s Cooperation of Poltava, Economy And Law University etc.).
On the base of University of Advanced Education the following establishments are functioning:
Scientific Center of Education Integration and Systematization of Academy of Pedagogics of Ukraine; Laboratory of Integration and Systematization of School Education of Institute of Pedagogics of academy of Pedagogics of Ukraine.
