The Orthodox Cross at a Poltava school
It happened in a secondary school in the village of Sokolova Balka, Novi Sanzhary district, on April 12, 1996. The pupils going home after the classes found an image of the cross that appeared in the tile plate above the door leading to the second floor of the school. The cross had the Orthodox shape. There
was the Church of St. George at the site of the school until the middle 1960’s. During Khrushchev's offensive against religion it was destroyed. Instead of it, an incomplete secondary school was built that was changed into a secondary one in the 1970's. There was a problem with placement of the pupils there in the 1980's.
In the early 1990’s the school had one more wing built on. According to the long-standing inhabitants, new building has been located in the place of some burials including of the priest Pirsky and his two daughters and someone else, which took place near the church.
The appearance of the image of the Orthodox cross has become a startler and aroused much interest.
The pastor of Mayachka Church and Bishop Feodosi of Poltava and Kremenchuk, heads of various agencies and reporters were told about the event. There were different theories attempting to explain the origin of the image of the cross. For example, extrasensory perception experts stated there was an intense stream of bioenergy in the place of the image of the cross.
The tile with the cross was removed and sent to Poltava for examination. Years have passed but there have been no official explanation of the wonder-working image yet. The tile portraying the cross is now kept in the Mayachka village church, Novi Sanzhary district. Impenetrable mystery of the cross has given rise to variety of assumptions. Today, religious ones prevail among them.
