Zagrebelny Pavlo

   Pavlo Zagrebelny was born in the village Soloshyne not far from Poltava.

 

In 1941, just after graduating from highZagreb.jpeg school, he volunteered for the front. He was a cadet of the Second Artillery School of Kiev, in August the same year he was wounded. The following year being again severely wounded, he was taken as prisoner. In 1945 Pavlo Zagrebelny worked in the Soviet military mission in West Germany.

 

   In 1946 he entered the Faculty of Philology of Dnipropetrovsk University. After graduating from this university in 1951, he began his literary practice activities. The main feature of Pavlo Zagrebelny - this is a novel, though to his credit there are novels and short stories. Also he is a master of literary criticism and literary performances. However, among the genre and stylistic diversity of a writer’s works a special place takes a historical fiction.

 

   In 1974 for the novels "The First Bridge" and "Death in Kiev" Pavlo Zagrebelny received the State Prize of Shevchenko. In 1980 his work "Crackdown" was awarded the State Prize of the USSR. In the years 1979-1986 Zagrebelny headed the Union of Writers of Ukraine. In 2004 he was awarded the title Hero of Ukraine.

 

   Today Pavlo Zagrebelny is one of the most popular Ukrainian writers whose creative legacy attracts more and more new readers. His works are known far outside Ukraine, his novels translated into many languages, has repeatedly portrayed.

 

   He died in Kiev in the age of 84 after a protracted tuberculosis.
